The Yaesu Ft-710 has a USB port that allows both CAT radio control as well as sound control. It also supports turning the radio on and off while power is continuously supplied to the radio from a power supply.
Radio Firmware Version (FT-710):
The FT-710 MUST have the factory firmware updated to version MAIN: V01-12 (02/29/24) or later to be compatible with RemoteTx.

Yaesu FT-710 Preparation:
Several initial configuration settings are recommended for the FT-710 to work best with RemoteTx.
The remaining radio settings can be left at factory default; then some may be adjusted with the RemoteTx Radio web interface.
- Function -> Operation Setting -> General -> Cat-1 Rate: 112500
The default of 38400 also works fine but 112500 will give maximum interface responsiveness.
Configuration examples below will assume a rate 112500. - Function -> Operation Setting -> General -> TX TIME OUT TIMER: 3 min
In case all control is lost due to a USB malfunction, radio will stop transmitting after 3 minutes.

If network connection is lost while transmitting, the RemoteTx RPi will automatically switch the radio back to Rx within a minute regardless of the above setting assuming there has not been a USB/CAT control malfunction between the RPi and the radio. - Function -> Operation Setting -> General -> SCU-LAN10: ON
This enables RemoteTx to obtain the scope data from the radio when the Scope option is selected. - Function -> Radio Setting -> Mode SSB -> Mod Source: USB
This sets the SSB modulation source to come from the audio signal of the USB cable plugged into the RPi.
It is also configurable from the RemoteTx Radio interface.
Setup procedure:
- Connect the usb port on the FT-710 to one of the blue (USB 3.0) usb ports on the Raspberry Pi (RPi) with a USB cable.
- Plug the ethernet network port on the RPi into an Internet connected router with a Cat5 network cable. (Wifi can be configured later once initial connection is established via ethernet.) Remember to copy the ‘remotetx.conf’ file to the top level of the RPi SDCard first.
- Apply power to the RPi so that it boots up. It should take about 2 minutes; the RPi may reboot a couple times if this is the first time boot. During this time it will acquire a network address from the router and automatically connect via the Internet to the RemoteTx service.
- Make sure power is applied to the radio. (The radio does not have to be on. RemoteTx can turn it on and off.)
Remote Control:
- Using a PC, Mac, phone or tablet open a browser (Chrome or Safari) to https://your-callsign.remotetx.net
- At the login prompt, enter your RemoteTx username and password.
- Accept the prompt to allow the use of the microphone by the browser. You may also be prompted to save your password. This is a good idea if you are using a device that you use often.
- The RemoteTx station control interface will appear showing the ‘Setup’ tab.
- The FT-710 will show USB-0 and USB-1 in the USB Serial Ports List. Use USB-0.
- Select FT-710 from the radio choices and select USB-0 and Baud Rate of 115200.

- Select the upper ‘Radio’ tab and click on the ‘Connect FT-710 ‘ button. This will initiate a control connection to the radio and show it’s current status. (It could be on or off.)
It could take between 5-10 seconds initially to connect and determine the power status of the radio. - If the radio status is ‘OFF’, click the ‘POWER’ button to bring the radio online and display its controls. (This can take a few seconds for the radio to start.)

- The radio control interface should now be online.

- Select the upper ‘Audio ‘ tab and in the ‘Remote Audio’ area, select the ‘USB Audio Codec’ sound card choice.
- Click on the green ‘Start/Restart Audio 1’.
- Wait about 5-10 seconds after which the ‘Call Radio’ and ‘Hang Up ‘ buttons should appear in the ‘Local Audio’ area.
Usually the audio call will start automatically without the need to click on the Call Radio button and you should hear received radio audio.

- AUDIO NOTES:
If the audio call does not automatically start, Click on the ‘Call Radio’ button to initiate bi-directional audio to the radio. If audio becomes disrupted due to unreliable network conditions, clicking ‘Reset Local’ will re-initiate the browser audio and re-clicking the ‘Start/Restart Audio 1’ button will re-initiate the RPi audio. (Normally re-clicking the ‘Start/Restart Audio 1’ button is only necessary if there has been an Internet disruption at the radio site.)
The audio system is quite robust and will attempt to automatically re-establish audio connections if they are lost. If audio does permanently drop out due to network conditions, the first thing to try is to click the Green Start/Restart Audio button to re-establish full audio at both ends. - Make sure the ‘TX Mod’ and ‘RX Level’ checkboxes are checked. (Otherwise there will be no received or transmitted audio.)
- The above TX/RX levels of 20/25 are a good starting point for audio adjustment. Fine tune them to your preference and specific PC/Phone headset configurations.
- Click on the ‘Radio’ tab to go back to the radio interface and control the radio. The various controls should be familiar to an operator accustomed to using the FT-710 radio.
Typical Radio Control Settings:
RemoteTx allows setting the most frequently used controls during typical operation. Buttons either toggle features on and off or cycle through available values. Slider controls allow setting variable values. Following are initial settings that are known to work well. They can be fine tuned to personal preference as experience is gained with the solution.
- Mod-Source: USB (This sets the transmit audio source to use the USB sound card of the radio.)
- Audio RX/TX initially set at 50. Adjust for personal preference.
- AF-GAIN: Has no effect so leave at 0. If it is above 0, the radio speaker will be heard at the station location.
- PROC: This is the processor setting. 50 is a good starting value.
- The ‘Scope’ button is used to toggle the scope on and off. You can toggle it off for the most efficient network use possible.
(Even with the scope active, RemoteTx is very efficient with network bandwidth and will work fine on a reliable 4G or higher mobile network.)

The rest of the controls are self explanatory to an operator experienced with the FT-710.
If you are using a Mac or PC with a mouse that has a roller button, the roller can be used to change the values of controls that the mouse is hovering over. This includes the individual frequency digits and slider controls.
Disconnecting from Radio:
Release control of the radio in this order.
- Select upper ‘Radio’ tab.
- Click the ‘POWER’ button to turn the radio off if this is desired (it can also be left on, ready for the next connection).
- Click the ‘Disconnect FT-710’ to release remote control of the radio.
- Click the Setup tab, then click the Logout button and click yes when prompted to logout.
- Close the browser to disconnect from the RPi.
Additional Interface Features:
- Slider Zoom Control for Mobile.
Clicking on the title or number value of a Slider control will trigger it’s zoom status that makes it easier to adjust when using a mobile phone.
Clicking anywhere out side the slider will return the interface to it’s normal state.

The same works for the TX/RX button using the ‘Zoom Tx / Rx’ button.

- Waterfall – Click to Frequency:
If you click with a mouse or tap on a mobile device, any part of the waterfall area, the radio will be set immediately to that frequency.

- Mobile Device Form Factor:
When using the RemoteTx radio control interface on a mobile device, the control layout will adjust to fit the mobile device screen format.
All the regular controls remain available, but some will be repositioned for optimized access.

- Click to Copy to Clipboard Info:
Clicking on FT-710 or the Time, will copy info to the clipboard for easy pasting in to other programs.
